Restaurants Running Low On Food?

I’ve been worried about a food shortage for a while now, but it seems things are a bit more serious than I thought they’d be.

You see, part of the problem has been the supply chains for restaurants and grocery stores aren’t the same chain. Farms growing for one chain don’t shift easily to the other. With so many restaurants out of business for the moment, suppliers are all kinds of screwed.

Meanwhile, there’s more demand at grocery stores since people can’t go out every night, thus creating shortages of key items.

However, you’d think that those who are still serving folks would have their pick of available supplies.

You’d be wrong.

Threat To Food Supply Continues

The last week or so has been pretty busy and, well, money’s been tight. It always gets that way around this time of the month as I want for my monthly paycheck (yay freelance life!), so I’ve been a little quiet.

However, an order from the grocery store made me wonder if maybe things were starting to normalize just a bit. After all, everything was there and there wasn’t any rationing going on. Maybe we were getting back to the old usual.

Well, probably not.

Sprouts Of Survival

I’ve always been excited when a seed I plant sprouts. Each new sprout represents new hope, a new chance to produce something that will feed my family and reduce our dependence on the food supply system.

Most gardeners look at sprouts somewhat similarly. After all, I suspect the excitement for new life is encoded on our DNA or something.

However, right now, I have black bean and tomato sprouts that have just popped up and they mean so much more to me.

People Waking Up To The Economic Threat

I’ve spent a lot of time talking about the coming food shortage, but it’s not the only threat we’re staring down the barrel of.

While there will be a food shortage, it’s really a matter of how bad is it going to be. Will we have to pay a few pennies more per can of vegetables? Or will be we looking at outright famine? Right now, we don’t really know.

What we do know, though, is that something else is coming too, and that’s the economic impact.

We’re Not In This Together

A couple of days ago, my wife was watching something on television and some actor from one of that’s channel’s shows came on. He was clearly recorded from his cell phone and he began to talk about how “we’re all in this together.”

It’s a common sentiment around this time. Celebrities and corporations all seem to be echoing it. Politicians too.

The elite want you to know that they understand precisely what you’re dealing with and that they’re just like you.

Of course, it’s all total BS.

Changes In Attitude

In the past, I made valiant efforts to prep. I wanted food stores, water saved, and all that good stuff. But, much as I love my wife, she just wasn’t really getting it. When money got a little bit tight, she jumped on the preps as a way to save a little cash.

Which, of course, were never replaced because she didn’t really see much of a need.

Now, we’re in the middle of a real SHTF event and she’s had a change of heart. The trick is, changing long term attitudes.

Why Every Prepper Needs A Scout Rifle

Generally, I’m a black rifle kind of a guy. While I enjoy hunting and all that, the guns that really talk to me have predominantly been the evil black rifles. Particularly the AR-15, but I have affection for the AK platform as well.

Regardless of that, though, I’ll be the first to tell you that if your prepper arsenal is just an AR-15, you’re not really all that well equipped. Yes, even if you have a handgun.

In fact, I’d actually argue that you can probably get along well enough even without a fighting rifle.

What you need, though, after your handgun and shotgun, is a scout rifle.

Add Chicken To The Potential Food Shortage List

I really, really get tired of seeing this kind of stuff. I don’t want there to be a food shortage. I know I sound like a broken record on this stuff, but I keep seeing indications that we’re headed toward a food shortage.

I was hoping to go through today without anything new. After all, haven’t I see all the indicators I need?

Well, what I want and what is actually going to happen typically aren’t similar to one another.

Famine May Not Be All We Have To Deal With

Food shortages look, from all indications, to be on the near horizon.  The only real question is just how severe they’ll be. Will it be a case of prices get a bump but we otherwise won’t notice?

Or, will it be empty shelves like we have no or even worse?

Honestly, I don’t think anyone knows just yet. What we do know is that it’s best to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

But the problem is, food shortages–even particularly nasty food shortages–may not be the whole of the problem.

Why I’m NOT Gardening Organically

I don’t know this is for sure today, but back in the day, most preppers gardened organically. They composted and used organic methods of pest control. Their reasoning, that these would be available to them when everything else collapsed, makes a great deal of sense.

Despite it making sense, though, I ain’t doing it, and I figured I’d talk a bit about why.
